Explore the Dwarsrivier Valley with a local guide

The scenic Dwarsrivier Valley abounds with not only the most spectacular scenery but hidden treasures of rich history and culture, and a strong community atmosphere. The best way to explore the valley? With a born and bred local guide.

In this Travel with Purpose blog, we’d like to introduce you to Austin Lawrence, tour guide for our popular Wine Walks.

Meet Austin Lawrence

Q:: How long have you been a tour guide?

Austin Lawrence: I have been a tour guide in this beautiful valley for three years going on four.

Q: Why did you become a tour guide?

AL: Growing up in this valley, I knew it was something very special. So, deciding to become a tour guide I could combine my love for nature and culture and show guests the beauty of the place I call home.

Q: Tell us more about the Wine Walks

AL: The Wine Walks are the perfect opportunity to explore the beautiful Stellenbosch outdoors. You will embark on a 12km walk starting at the foothills of the Helshoogte pass at Rustenburg where you will then make your way to Idas Valley. There we will view the historical dam and I will share some interesting stories about this beautiful valley.

En route to the Banhoek Valley, we will enjoy some wine and roosterkoek locally made by Tannie Siena. We will then make our way to Thelema Mountain Vineyards for a wine tasting accompanied by spectacular views. To finish off the walk, our final stop will be at Le Pommier Estate where we will enjoy a lunch and wine tasting.

Q: What are your favourite things about the Wine Walks?

AL: The Wine Walks are really the best way to explore not only world class wine, but the stories, history and beautiful valley views.

Q: Other than wine walks, what should visitors and tourists know about Dwarsrivier or see/do in Dwarsrivier?

AL: The Dwarsrivier valley is a tranquil place surrounded by majestic mountains. It is truly a hidden gem of Stellenbosch with loads of activities to do for the whole family from hiking, walking wine tours, mountain biking, wine tours and cultural tours.
